If you have trouble opening jars, you’re far from alone.
Jars can be a challenge for the elderly or for people with limited strength, but I’m in my mid-30s and in good health, and I still find jars impossible to open sometimes.
Why are jars so hard to open? The main reason is one you can hardly begrudge: it’s the vacuum seal that’s keeping your food fresh. Jars are usually vacuum-sealed for freshness, creating a seal that draws the lid on tightly and keeps out bacteria. Sometimes there’s also trace amounts of food or liquid that can be left in the threading of the jar’s lid, creating a glue-like effect when it dries and sets.
